Ask Not What Your Chapter Can Do for You; Ask What You Can Do for Your Chapter!

Volunteer opportunities abound

by Karen L. Zorn, Chapter President

Did you know that except for a handful of positions at the Society’s Arlington, VA office, all positions within STC are filled by volunteers? Yep, Marc Clifford, the current president, is a volunteer, as are all the other board members. Our chapter is the same — no committee manager/administrative council (CMAC) member is paid for the hours (and they can be many and long) that he or she puts into chapter management.

The Phoenix Chapter is only as good and strong as its volunteer base, and the volunteers come from our membership. A variety of jobs exist; some require major time commitments, and others are small. Some are one-time only, others are ongoing commitments.

Following are a few of the volunteer needs we have for the 2008-2009 program year. Won’t you consider one of them? Help add to our chapter’s success today!

  • Publications, Art, and Online competition judges and back office assistance (September through December, time commitments vary)
  • Rough Draft (newsletter) contributors
  • Arrangements manager
  • Registration desk at meetings (a good way to meet folks)
  • Public Relations assistance
  • Web site assistance
  • Virtual meeting assistance
  • Programs/education committee assistance
  • College writing competition manager
