Welcome to a new chapter year

by Karen L. Zorn, Chapter President

It is amazing how short the time between the first week of June and the first week of September really is, at least in perception. While our programs were suspended for the summer, the Committee Managers/Administrative Council (CMAC) has been busy plotting and planning the 2008-2009 program year. And do we have some plans for you!

CMAC news

The remaining empty chairs on the Administrative Council are filled. Deb Duane volunteered for Vice President and Shelly Duncan volunteered to take over the Treasurer duties from treasurer pro-tem Dana Osborne.

Committee managers

Julie Biel is our new Volunteer Manager. She will be talking with you at meetings regarding volunteer needs and keeping track of all who lend a hand over the year. Robin McGraw, the Rough Draft managing editor resigned due to health issues. Gloria McConnell (newsletter@stc-phoenix.com) has taken over as Managing Editor. I’m certain you’ve noticed Rough Draft’s new look and feel. As always, your contributions to the newsletter are welcome.

From the bottom of my heart I thank you all. Your efforts help make our chapter stronger and my job easier.

PAO

The 2008 Southwest Publications, Art, and Online (PAO) Competition co-managers are Roberta Davidson and Deb Duane (pao@stc-phoenix.com). This competition is open to STC members and non-members alike. PAO offers you an opportunity to put your technical publications, art, and online material before a peer-judging panel. For full details, see the PAO box on the right side of the page, and click the link there for full details. You’ll be hearing from Roberta and Deb regarding PAO volunteer opportunities.

Programs

Maggie Haenel (programs@stc-phoenix.com) and the program committee have been busy lining up some exciting presentations for you. Here’s a preview:

  • September – Brenda Huettner presented “Project Management” for Tech. Communicators
  • October brings in Geoff Hart from Montreal, Canada to present on Tuesday followed on Wednesday with an all-day workshop on information design.
  • November – A virtual meeting, topic TBD
  • December – A Murder Mystery Dinner
  • February’s virtual meeting features RJ Jacquez, Adobe’s FrameMaker evangelist presenting Adobe Technical Communication Suite
  • 2009 – Neil Perlin will bring in 2009 with “Using Help Authoring Tools as CMS” followed by a full-day workshop on either RoboHelp or Madcap Flare.
  • See Prospective Member Incentive Program for special pricing available if you bring a first-time guest to one of our dinner meetings.

As we did last year, we’re going to alternate dinner meetings and virtual meetings. We will have two dinner meetings, then virtual meeting. We’re back at the Airport Hilton. The hospitality and arrangements team is making changes in the registration set up and providing better signage in the lobby.

Quite a few other projects are bubbling and brewing in the pot. We’ll keep you posted as details become available.
