Cool down those laps!
by Gloria McConnell, Managing Editor
Do you actually use your laptop computer on your lap? If you do, and you are tired of that uncomfortable warmth, plus worried about the impact of the warm temperature on your computer’s health, you might consider the Targus HeatDefense pad for laptops.
This pad can be used on your lap or on your desk. It is much simpler, less expensive (and quieter!) than the laptop cooling systems that use fans. The pad contains crystals that absorb heat; as the crystals warm, they change into a soft gel. Four reviewers at Best Buy have given this pad an overall rating of 2.8 (not so great). I like it, though.
My assessment is that I will not use this product for long periods of time. It’s for the times I actually have the computer on my lap for a few hours. Once the crystals all turn to gel, the pad is warm. I don’t think it dissipates the heat well after that. But until that time, it removes the heat from your computer, and also provides a barrier between it and your lap. The HeatDefense pad comes with a 1-year warranty.
The price ranges from $25 — 30, with sale prices at about $20.
