The Value of Our STC Chapter: It’s Real!
by Karen L. Zorn - President, STC Phoenix My wish for all you is a Prosperous 2009! There’s no need for me to tell you that these are tough economic times. You read about it in the newspapers (those that are still in business), see it on the internet, and hear about it on the television news. Many companies have cut back on funding for professional memberships and conferences; have asked employees to take pay cuts so they can avoid layoffs; and those of us in contracting are experiencing project funding cuts. It’s gloom and doom everywhere, except at the Society of Technical Communication Phoenix Chapter. How can STC Phoenix help you in these stressing economic times? Here are a few examples of résumé line items that just might make the difference for your job search:
» Networking: Attend meetings and meet with other technical communicators. Networking is an important aspect of job hunting.
» Education: Attend meetings to learn about new things in the technical communication world. Keep your skills and knowledge up-to-date.
» Publications: Contribute to Rough Draft and become a published author!
» Community Service: Volunteer to help – opportunities always exist. For instance, be a judge at the Arizona Science and Engineer Fair (AzSEF) March 24th, or run for office. The elected positions of Program Manager and Vice President are currently open. Other committee manager positions are also available for the taking. Talk to any CMAC member for more information.
» Pocketbook: Bring a friend to a dinner meeting for a discounted rate.
Do these activities really make a difference? You bet! At a recent interview, I was told that my varied contributions to STC made my résumé stand out from the several thousand submitted.
You can be a standout, too! Get involved with STC Phoenix. It pays in more ways that one.
