The Nominations Committee is pleased to present our slate of candidates for the 2010 STC Phoenix Chapter election. A link to the online ballot will be e-mailed to all current chapter members, except student members, by April 26. You can vote in the election from April 26 to May 2, 2010.
Kathy Graden – Candidate for President
Kathy Graden has been an active member of the Phoenix Chapter’s Administrative Council since 1996, serving as chapter secretary, managing editor of Rough Draft, and most recently as chapter vice president. During her tenure with Rough Draft, the newsletter won multiple awards in the STC international Newsletter Competition, and she published articles that have been reprinted in other STC chapter publications and in Intercom magazine.
Kathy has presented sessions at two STC Region 5 conferences, and has served as judge or judging team coordinator for STC’s Southwest Regional Publications/Art/Online Competition, for STC’s international Technical Publications Competition, and for the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair.
Kathy earned a bachelor’s degree in writing from the University of Pittsburgh. Her technical communication experience includes engagements with Computer Associates, Lucent Technologies, Honeywell, and Acxiom Corporation. She lives in north Phoenix with her two dogs, and currently exercises her writing and research skills as a financial crimes investigative analyst for American Express.

Maggie Haenel – Candidate for Secretary
Maggie Haenel has been an active member of STC for seven years. She has served the Phoenix Chapter as education manager, as program manager for four years, and currently as secretary.
Maggie is a consultant in project management, instructional design, and performance improvement. She’s held a variety of development and management positions in training and instructional design during the past 15 years.
Now employed by Michaels & Associates, Maggie began her career as a public school teacher working with severely language-impaired, learning-disabled children. Her background in education and her master’s studies in instructional design and media combine to provide an invaluable knowledge base and skill set for clients in a broad range of industries.
Debra Gabriel – Candidate for Treasurer
Active in the Phoenix Chapter since 1988, senior member Debra Gabriel has served in roles ranging from publicity to chapter treasurer in 1995–97 and a local Publications/Art/Online Competition manager in 1997–98. Debra especially enjoys judging at the international level.
Debra’s experience in technical publishing grows with the times. Beginning as a technical illustrator and publication designer/production person, she now develops online information and instructional materials.
Jan Kruse – Candidate for Program Manager
Jan Kruse joined the Phoenix Chapter in 1998. She served as program manager for the 2009–10 program year. She has also served as STC exhibit manager and has been a documentation judge at the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair. In 2007, she co-authored an article that was accepted for publication in Intercom magazine. Jan is currently a member of the STC Instructional Design and Learning SIG.
Over the past 24 years, Jan has developed user’s guides, online help, and training guides primarily for the financial industry. Her volunteer writing efforts include a training guide for Ronald McDonald House and a user’s guide for ABCD (After Breast Cancer Diagnosis), Inc.
Miachelle DePiano – Candidate for Membership Manager
Miachelle DePiano has been an active member of STC since 2007. She recently volunteered to fill in as membership manager and co-chaired the Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF) Committee with Gloria McConnell. She intends to chair the AzSEF committee in 2010–11, with plans to streamline judging.
Miachelle is a technical writer with Intel. She is a military veteran of the U.S. Army, and her military career was the foundation for her becoming a technical writer. She graduated from ASU in May 2008 with a B.S. in Multimedia Writing and Technical Communication. As a technical writer, she is interested in how social media are changing the industry, as well as how technological advances will change documentation creation and usage. In addition to working for Intel, she is a freelance journalist and photographer for two East Valley publications. She is married and has two children and three dogs. Photography is her current hobby.
