Occupational Summary

The incumbent is responsible for the following:

  • Managing the documentation process
  • Researching and  recommending applicable best practices
  • Researching, organizing, writing, editing, and publishing software documentation for customers
  • Evaluating, implementing, and learning software tools necessary for producing output that meets technical documentation best practices and internal ISO standards

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Essential responsibilities include:

  • Managing the documentation process
  • Planning milestones
  • Developing user-focused content as an integral part of software products for customers

Typical activities include:

  • Monitoring the status of documentation projects and adherence to established schedules
  • Working with subject matter experts in the development of on-line help content, software manuals, and other user publications
  • Performing substantive editing, layout, and illustration

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Developing and maintaining documentation procedures that conform to established departmental processes
  • Participating in product development planning and execution for product releases, including design reviews, testing, and release planning, advocating usability of the software for users
  • Conducting usability tests with new documentation for software releases
  • Compiling statistical data for estimating future documentation projects
  • Managing version control of source and output files
  • Researching new technology for documentation and online help systems
  • Directing and coordinating research activities based on input from marketing, sales, and technical staff
  • Directing and coordinating localization efforts for documentation, including cost estimates, vendor selection, and project scheduling
  • Maintaining and updating computer-based text files
  • Assisting in maintaining document control for the company, including International Organization of Standardization (ISO) documents

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BS from an accredited college or university in Technical Writing, English, Education, Communications, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum 1 year in information development, technical writing or editing, plus two to five years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Basic knowledge of Agile development and of software engineering
  • Fluency in English with exceptional written and verbal communication skills as well as knowledge of English grammar and sentence structure
  • Highly motivated self-starter who takes the initiative to work independently and creatively with minimal supervision
  • Analytical thinker with demonstrated knack for identifying, scrutinizing, improving, and effectively communicating complicated processes or concepts
  • Detail-oriented with ability to thrive in a collaborative environment
  • Knowledge of structured help-authoring standards, such as DITA preferred
  • Technical writing portfolio required.
  • Eligible to work in the United States
