Nominations Committee Announces Slate of Candidates

Ballots Must Be Postmarked by April 7th!

Dana Osborne – Candidate for Chapter President

Since joining in 2000, Dana Osborne has been an active volunteer in the Phoenix chapter.  In addition to her current role as vice president, Dana has served as hospitality manager, arrangements manager, volunteer coordinator, PAO competition co-manager, and program manager.   Through her activities to support STC’s 50th anniversary and the Phoenix chapter’s 40th birthday, Dana was a key contributor to the chapter’s Award for Excellence in the Society’s Public Relations Competition, an award which recognizes the effectiveness of chapters and special interest groups (SIGs) in their public relations efforts.  In 2003, Dana received the Distinguished Chapter Service Award for her exemplary service and dedication to the chapter and its activities.

Currently manager of Member Services and Training for Schaller Anderson Behavioral Health of Arizona, Incorporated, Dana’s experience includes a broad background in training, instructional design, technical writing, business analysis, quality improvement and project management.  She has worked in both the public and private sectors and in a number of different industries, including software development, social services, health care, and consulting.  Abilities most striking in Dana are her ability to clearly and concisely define problems, develop innovative solutions, and build strong collaborative relationships.

Karen Zorn – Candidate for Vice President

Since joining STC in 2001, Karen Zorn has been an active volunteer in the Phoenix chapter. Her roles have included mentoring manager, community outreach and food drive coordinator, PAO competition co-manager, Region 5 Conference co-manager and, most recently, Managing Editor responsibilities for the Rough Draft newsletter.  Through her activities to support the STC Phoenix Chapter, Karen was a key contributor to the chapter’s Award for Excellence in 2005 and received the Chapter’s Distinguished Chapter Service Award for her exemplary service and dedication.

Karen is the president of Zorn Technologies, Inc.  Her experience includes a broad background in training, instructional design, technical writing, business analysis, and project management.

Karen Forrester – Candidate for Treasurer

Karen Forrester has been a technical communicator for more than 20 years, and a member of STC for 13 years. She specializes in developing online and printed training materials and documentation for clients in industries such as banking, electronics and health care management. Karen also has experience as a QA analyst, developing and implementing manual and automated software tests. Most recently, Karen has assisted clients in developing policies and procedures, software requirements and training materials, and conducting user acceptance testing.

Karen has a unique focus on detail and experience in quality analysis which have contributed to those qualities the nominations committee seeks as candidate for Treasurer.

Karen Pasley – Candidate for Secretary

Karen Pasley has been a member of STC for more than 15 years, beginning her technical communicator career in writing for the educational technology industry. Her focus on end users helps her identify their goals and limit their frustrations in her documents. This connection with end users naturally drew her professional focus to technical training and instructional design.

Over the past four or five years, Karen’s participation in STC grew. Through networking with active members and officers of the Phoenix chapter in the telecommunications field, she began to volunteer at the chapter level. Innovative in her approaches, Karen created the idea of introducing potential members and new members to active volunteers. Implementing her idea resulted in an ease within the chapter, and helps to create a safe and friendly environment. She particularly enjoys getting to know people and connecting those with mutual interests at the meetings so that no one needs to feel “new” longer than the first few minutes. She values an open attitude that welcomes new ideas and experience. In the position of Secretary, Karen hopes to continue and enhance STC Phoenix Chapter Community’s open and friendly atmosphere.

Maggie Haenel – Candidate for Programs Manager

Maggie Haenel has been a member of STC for three years, beginning her professional career as a classroom teacher for Scottsdale Public Schools. Her love of teaching and interest in designing instruction for adults led her to a second career in instructional design. She has worked in a variety of industries over the past 10 years, including healthcare benefits, electronics distribution, telecom, banking, education and insurance to name a few. Her focus on learners’ needs helps her create training programs that are focused, interactive, and effective.

Maggie, a long time ASTD member, became aware of STC while working with Sherry Michaels. Maggie immediately became involved as a volunteer working on the Education Committee. In thinking of new ways to deliver value to members, she set up a number of workshops and courses through a partnership with Scottsdale Community College. This partnership has enabled our chapter to hold computer training programs taught by both our own members and SCC’s teaching staff. Full of ideas for a new year, Maggie is ready to take on planning programs for our chapter meetings. In the position of Programs Manager, Maggie hopes to engage our members on a monthly basis and continue to add value to the STC Phoenix Chapter Community.

Debbie Duane – Candidate for Membership Manager

Debbie (Ball) Duane joined STC in 2001 after relocating to the Phoenix-metro area from Silicon Valley.  An active member of the Phoenix Chapter Community since joining, Debbie has served as a volunteer in various capacities, was volunteer manager during the 2003 to 2004 year, and served on the registration committee for the 2005 Region 5 Conference. As part of the technical writing team at Inter-Tel, Debbie writes and edits end-user documentation for voice and data communication products.

Among Debbie's most striking abilities are her "can do" attitude and willingness to jump in and enthusiastically tackle behind the scene jobs.

Debbie is an advocate of membership in STC, having written an article on the subject in the February 2003 issue of Rough Draft, and would do everything feasible to promote and encourage continued and new membership.
